Humboldt wins eighth in a row at Lynx expense

WEBSTER CITY — Unable to find any consistency at the offensive end of the court, the Webster City girls’ basketball team struggled to keep up with red hot Humboldt in a North Central Conference tussle Monday night inside the WCHS gymnasium.

The Lynx had a pair of 41⁄2-minute scoring droughts and shot just 33 percent from the floor in a 48-31 loss the Wildcats. It was the eighth consecutive victory for Humboldt (10-2, 5-1 NCC).

WCHS was hampered by the absence of starting forward Jenna Miller. The Lynx have gone without at least one starter in the majority of its contests this season, a fact that is not lost on head coach Nicole Muhlenbruch.

“We just can’t get any consistency going,” she said. “We can’t get back to where we were before (the program was shut down for two weeks in late November) and it’s frustrating.”

Humboldt ended the first quarter on a 6-0 run and extended it to 10-0 before WCHS (1-7, 0-5 NCC) was able to find the bottom of the basket.

Trailing by 13 at the half, the Lynx closed to within 10 midway through the third on back-to-back buckets by Leah Kasch and then didn’t score again until the 6:02 mark of the fourth quarter on an Alley Odland steal and layup. Humboldt extended its cushion to 20 with another 10-0 run.

Kasch and Odland both scored eight points in the loss. Kasch collected eight rebounds, while Odland had six steals and three assists.

Livia Kasch scored all five of the Lynx first-quarter points, but didn’t score again. Reese Casey came off the bench to supply four points and five rebounds. Kelly Stoakes was limited to a single free throw, but registered five rebounds, five steals and two assists.

Bae Arnold led Humboldt with 14 points. WCHS limited Kendal Clark, the Wildcats’ leading scorer at 16.1 points per game, to just five on 1 of 8 shooting.
