Hawks rally in fourth quarter to get by Jaguars
BURNSIDE — A furious rally over the final eight minutes propelled the South Hamilton boys’ basketball team to a non-conference victory here Tuesday night.
Trailing 39-28 after three quarters, the Hawks outscored Southeast Valley 19-5 in the fourth to prevail, 47-44.
After watching the game on tape late Tuesday night, South Hamilton head coach Matt Juber said the final margin should have been seven, 49-42, but a bucket by the Hawks’ Freddie Lewis in the third quarter was inadvertently awarded to Southeast Valley’s Tre Fisher.
Official versus unofficial, in the end it didn’t matter. A win is a win is a win.
“I’m very proud of the boys and how they responded to adversity all night,” Juber said. “There were a lot of ups and downs, and the scoring issue at the end of the third quarter could’ve been the final straw, but to their credit the boys came out in the fourth quarter and battled their tails off.
“It was a great win to come out of winter break with, and one we can build off for the second half of the season.”
Clayton Ubben and Carter Hewitt combined for 24 points and 14 rebounds in the paint for the Hawks. Lewis ripped the nets for 11 points and Tycin Barkema chipped in seven more points, six caroms and four assists. Kyler Hodnefield knocked down a 3-pointer to go along with six rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Sam Hanson (11 points) and Kolson Kruse (10 points) scored in double figures for Southeast Valley (6-3), which led 24-19 at the intermission.
