CALEIGH FOR THE WIN
Hewitt’s bucket with 1.8 seconds left lifts Hawks over SEV
BURNSIDE — The play was set up for Caleigh Hewitt to be the hero. And that’s exactly what she became.
Hewitt hit the game-winning basket with 1.8 seconds left on the clock here Tuesday night, as South Hamilton knocked off Southeast Valley, 46-45, in a non-conference girls’ basketball game.
Hawks’ head coach Mark Henderson drew up the play during a timeout and his players executed it flawlessly. Tanna Thompson whipped a pass to Mackenzy Grady in the left corner, and Grady quickly got the ball to Hewitt on the left block. One dribble, turn and fire … nothing but net.
“It felt great for the girls to finish that game and come out with a win,” Henderson said. “I couldn’t be more proud of how we finished. Our last play was something we’ve never practiced, we just drew it up in the huddle and the girls ran it perfectly.”
Hewitt finished with seven points and 10 rebounds. Grady led the Hawks (3-6) in scoring with nine points to go along with two assists. Makena Galetich added eight points before fouling out and Ashlyn Erickson scored all five of her points at the free throw line, including a pair with 20 seconds remaining that evened the contest at 44. Zoey Duns had four points, nine rebounds, three steals and two assists.
Emily Hemmestad led Southeast Valley (4-6) and all scorers with 12 points.
The game was littered with fouls and foul shots. The team teams were whistled for a combined 48 infractions, which led to 57 free throws, 31 for the Jaguars and 26 for the Hawks.
South Hamilton led 24-22 at the half and 37-31 after three quarters.
