Down by 17, Rams rally and win on Stalder trey

JEFFERSON — The South Hamilton boys’ basketball team played with fire and got burned just as the buzzer blared here Tuesday night.

After trailing by as many as 17 points in the second quarter, Greene County mounted a furious rally to draw even in the waning moments and then celebrated all around the Hawks following Bryce Stalder’s 3-pointer as the clock hit all zeroes that gave the Rams a stunning 50-47 Heart of Iowa Conference victory.

South Hamilton (8-4, 3-3 HOIC) saw its four-game win streak evaporate.

“I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, a lack of consistency is our kryptonite,” South Hamilton head coach Matt Juber said. “We had plenty of chances to win, but we didn’t make the plays necessary to get it done.”

South Hamilton led 17-6 after one quarter and 23-6 early in the second, but it was a struggle the remainder of the way. Shots refused to fall, turnovers piled up and the defense waned. Throw it all together and it made the loss hard to stomach.

“Greene County didn’t do anything we didn’t expect them to do and they didn’t really alter their plan,” Juber said. “We got loose with the ball to the tune of 22 turnovers and that is absolutely a killer. You don’t win games with 22 turnovers.”

Throw in a tough night at the free throw line — the Hawks connected on just 8 of 17 attempts in the second half — and it all added up to a subpar performance.

Greene County (3-8, 2-4 HOIC) outscored South Hamilton 36-22 in the second half, including 16-11 in the fourth quarter to pull off the upset. The Rams knocked down seven 3-pointers, keyed by Richard Daugherty with four on his way to 14 points. Stalder added two triples and he scored a game-high 16 points.

Clayton Ubben led South Hamilton with a double-double — 13 points and 10 rebounds. Carter Hewitt produced 14 points and seven rebounds, and Tycin Barkema gave the Hawks a third double-digit scorer with 10 points.

Ubben, Hewitt and Barkema combined for 23 first-half points to help South Hamilton take a 25-14 lead into the break.
