Potential for top-3 bout for Swenson at Saturday’s Wood Invite

Hawks will be without Thompson, Willis at first tourney of season

JEWELL — There’s the potential — key word: potential — for South Hamilton senior Lane Swenson to get tested right away on Saturday. And what a fun six minutes it would be.

The Hawks’ third-ranked (Class 1A) 170-pounder could be in the same bracket as second-ranked Blake McAlister of South Central Calhoun at the Doug Wood Invitational, hosted by Manson-Northwest Webster. The two have never met, but they’re both returning state medalists with an eye on the top of the podium this winter.

Swenson, who was seventh at 170 at last season’s state tournament, will be back at his familiar weight. McAlister was sixth at 160 10 months ago and is ranked at 170, but whether he’ll be there on Saturday is unknown.

Still, it’s an intriguing match to think about.

“It’s early and rankings don’t matter, but we understand that’s a quality kid,” South Hamilton head coach Dan Brodie said. “If they end up in the same weight class, that could be a really fun weight class.”

It would certainly be the marquee match in a tournament that will be loaded with quality grapplers. A total of 13 are ranked, although at least one will be missing — the Hawks’ third-ranked (195) Trevor Thompson. South Hamilton will also be without senior 220-pounder Colton Willis, a district qualifier last winter.

Top-ranked (1A) 126-pounder Beau Klingensmith highlights the field. Klingensmith was a 2019 state runner-up, and has twice finished third at state.

Brodie says South Hamilton’s lineup will be finalized today and his wrestlers are excited to get out of the practice room and square off against some unfamiliar faces.

“I think we’re really excited just to see what we’ve got,” he said. “The first tournament is always that litmus test to see where you’re at.”
