WEBSTER CITY — What began in February is closer to fruition, as fundraising for the Wehrheim Park basketball court project is currently under way.

Anyone wishing to help the project can mail or drop off their donations, and organizers Jama Hisler and Meredith Bargfrede say all donors will be recognized upon completion of the court, which will be located at the park located in the southwest section of Webster City.

Local teenagers Keegan Hisler, Delainey Bargfrede and Josh Stansfield took the point on the initiative nearly 10 months ago. The trio presented their proposal to the Webster City City Council in February and then spent several months researching what the project would entail. They believe a basketball court at the park would be beneficial to all of the children that live in the neighborhood. They also think it would promote an active, healthy lifestyle and give kids additional opportunities to enjoy outdoor activities.

The entire cost of the project has been estimated at $25,000. The city has agreed to cover the cost for the dirt removal and the installing of the asphalt basketball court. Meredith Bargfrede says the group is also applying for a grant from the Enhance Hamilton County Foundation that it hopes will also help to cover the cost. The rest will come from private donations.

If the fundraising effort surpasses internal goals, Meredith Bargfrede says the additional funds will go toward enhancements, such as the possibility of installing lights and a fence around the new court.

Currently, there are basketball courts located at just two city parks — East Twin Park and Lions Stafford Park.
