Phetxoumphone wrestles at 113, places third at Preseason Nationals

DES MOINES — Webster City junior state champion wrestler Cam Phetxoumphone put together a strong showing at the USAW Brian Keck Memorial Preseason Nationals on Saturday.

Competing in the junior-senior division at 113 pounds, Phetxoumphone won five of six matches and placed third.

Phetxoumphone’s lone loss came in the semifinals against Illinois grappler Nicholas Gonzalez, 3-2, and Gonzalez went on to win the title. Phetxoumphone rebounded with a pair of wins on the backside of the bracket and capped his tournament with a 3-1 victory over Benjamin Aranda, also out of Illinois, in the third-place match.

The 2020 Class 2A state champion at 106 pounds with a perfect 40-0 record, Phetxoumphone will begin his junior season with WCHS later this month riding a 41-match prep winning streak.

A two-time North Central Conference champion, Phetxoumphone also placed fifth at 106 as a freshman in 2019.
