FORT DODGE — South Hamilton senior Ty Skartvedt closed out his prep cross country career by competing in the state meet for the third time on Saturday at Lakeside Golf Course.

And while the outcome wasn’t necessarily what he had in mind when he toed the start line, he walked away without regrets.

Skartvedt got out fast, but was unable to maintain the pace on a windy morning. He eventually toured the 5K course in 18:38.9 to place 79th overall in the boys’ Class 2A field of 139 competitors.

“He probably ran a little tight and he was a little nervous,” South Hamilton head coach Darrell Paulsen said of Skartvedt. “He was one of the first five or six kids to the corner, which is what he wanted, but then he tried to find some people to get behind because the wind was pretty strong.

“It wasn’t his best time, but he had a good season and I’m proud of him. He had a good career and in the back of his mind I think he knew he ran the best race he could run.”

Skartvedt was a key member of South Hamilton teams that placed sixth in 2A in 2017 and third in 1A in 2018. His previous individual finishes at state were 64th as a freshman and 52nd as a sophomore.

Skartvedt led the Hawks throughout the fall season. He was a top-five finisher at the Heart of Iowa Conference meet and finished in the top-10 at the state qualifier.

The state cross country meet was held over two days in an attempt to reduce fans on the course due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Friday, Sioux City North (4A) and Dallas Center-Grimes (3A) won boys’ team titles, while Johnston (4A) and Ballard (3A) shined on the girls’ side.
