A?total of 623 runners compete in 2 separate waves

WAVERLY — A field of 623 runners — 309 girls and 314 boys — tackled the Wartburg College cross country course in two waves at Tuesday’s Dick Pollitt Go-Hawk Classic.

Four races — freshman and sophomore girls, freshman and sophomore boys, junior and senior girls, and junior and senior boys — were run at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., with the two waves combined to provide the final results in the age classification races.

Webster City ran in the later wave, and competed well, to give the squad an early-season dose of confidence.

Irritated with himself that he couldn’t break 18 minutes at last week’s Lynx Invite, WCHS senior Jacob Willson achieved his goal on the relatively unfamiliar track in the damp conditions. He completed the 5K in 17:50.9 to place sixth in his wave and ninth overall.

The Lynx veterans continued to form a strong pack and had four runners in the top 17 in their wave, and all four placed among the top 26 overall. Matt Perin was the best of the next bunch, as he finished 20th overall in 18:18.8. Jose Ramirez (18:27.0) was less than nine seconds back in 24th. A few more paces back was Cole Reiling (18:32.3), who was 26th overall.

Codey Berg (20:08.2) was 64th in the junior/senior race. Wyatt Bingham (21:14.2) led the freshmen and sophomores in 47th.

Emma Peck led the WCHS girls’ team for the second time in as many meets. The sophomore was a top-6 finisher in her wave and 14th overall in 22:13.4.

Jacie Crutcher (23:36.5) led the juniors and seniors in 42nd place. Kaelyn Butz (23:51.8) was 46th, and Allison Oswald (25:57.7) took 83rd.

WCHS will take part in the Ballard Invite on Monday in Huxley. Fans are permitted from attending the meet due to COVID-19 concerns.
