WEBSTER CITY — With an average margin of victory of 29.4 points per game, the South Hamilton football team has repeatedly proven it’s a Class 1A power this fall.

People have noticed too.

After entering the Associated Press rankings for the first time after a Week 3 win over then eighth-ranked Dike-New Hartford, the Hawks (5-0) jumped up two spots to No. 5 in the latest poll, which was released Monday afternoon.

South Hamilton was expected to climb at least one spot following a loss by previously second-ranked South Central Calhoun on Friday, but the Hawks also leapfrogged Emmetsburg. South Central Calhoun fell all the way to No. 9, while Southeast Valley, which upset the Titans, entered the rankings for the first time at No. 8.

A lopsided 42-7 win over previously undefeated Mason City didn’t help or hurt Webster City in the 3A rankings. The Lynx (5-0) stayed at No. 7, as all 10 ranked teams from last week won on Friday.

Southeast Polk (4A), Cedar Rapids Xavier (3A), OA-BCIG (1A), Grundy Center (A) and Audubon (8-man) stayed at the top of their respective classes, but there were two changes. No. 1 in 2A two weeks ago only to slip a spot last week, Williamsburg climbed back to the top of its class. In 8-man, Don Bosco joined Audubon at the top after a week at No. 2. Don Bosco had been No. 1 early in the season, but dropped after it sat idle for two weeks.

AP voters continued to have differing opinions on the class leaders. At least three teams received first-place votes in all six classes, with four teams securing votes in three of the classes (3A, 2A and A).

In 2A, Prairie City-Monroe continued to covet the most first-place votes (five), but the Mustangs stayed at No. 3 in the overall poll.

WCHS and South Hamilton will both go on the road Friday night. The Lynx will be the Homecoming opponent for Gilbert, while the Hawks will visit LeGrand to face East Marshall.
