WCHS will require masks at fall sporting events

No limitation on fan attendance

WEBSTER CITY– Face masks will be the favored accessory at all Webster City sporting events this fall.

If you want to attend, you need to wear one.

That was the message from WCHS athletic director Joe Shanks on Tuesday as he discussed the school’s decision to require masks due to the COVID-19 pandemic at all Lynx events. The WCHS school board adopted the protocols on Monday.

“We want to try to be as safe as possible in this era,” Shanks said. “Even though there are a lot of uncertainties, this is one way that we’re doing the best we can. We need people to accept the responsibility of being safe in this environment that we live in right now.”

Whether fans are entering the football gates or the WCHS gymnasium for volleyball, a mask must be worn. Fans will also be required to keep their masks on while seated and when they move around, whether it be to use the restroom or purchase something from the concession stand.

Because of the mask requirement, WCHS will not limit fan attendance at any of its sporting events.

“We liked the idea of requiring masks with unlimited attendance,” Shanks said. “Social distancing is going to be up to the people that come in.”

Shanks said masks will be recommended, but not required at the Lynx Invite cross country meet at Briggs Woods Golf Course next Tuesday. Meet workers will be in masks, and Shanks said it will be up to coaches to decide whether or not their athletes wear masks when they’re not competing.

“Since we have only the one meet, we’re not going to require them, but our workers will wear masks,” Shanks said. “We are recommending them for fans though.”

WCHS will open the football season at home on Friday against Spencer at 7:30 p.m. The Lynx volleyball team will make its home debut next Thursday, Sept. 3, against third-ranked (Class 3A) Clarion-Goldfield-Dows at 7:30 p.m.

South Hamilton protocols

South Hamilton has its own mask protocols that were announced last week.

Fans will be required to wear masks when entering and moving around common areas. However, fans can choose to remove their masks once they are seated.
