All-State Repeat: Stoakes earns her 2nd straight honor from IGCA
WCHS sophomore named to Class 4A 3rd team, 1 of 9 NCC players honored
WEBSTER CITY — Quality pitches to hit were few and far between for Kelly Stoakes this summer, but the Webster City sophomore still put together a standout season that generated all-state status.
On Thursday, Stoakes was named to the Class 4A all-state third team by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association. She’s now a two-time all-state performer following a second-team nod as a freshman.
Webster City’s lead-off hitter gained the attention of every pitcher she faced, and most nibbled around the corners without giving her pitches over the plate. Still, she led the Lynx in a majority of offensive categories and led the club to a third-place finish in the North Central Conference and 7-7 overall record.
Stoakes, a unanimous first-team all-NCC player, led WCHS in batting average (.462), on base percentage (.580), slugging percentage (.641), total hits (18), singles (13) and doubles (4). Her 10 runs scored and one home run were both second on the squad, and she was third in RBIs with seven.
Defensively, Stoakes worked behind the plate for the majority of the season — a first after spending her eighth grade and freshman seasons in the outfield. She returned to the grass in center late in the season.
Stoakes was one of nine NCC players honored by the IGCA.
In 3A, Humboldt accrued four all-state nods, including first-team spots for seniors Ellie Jacobson and Carlie Thompson, as well as junior Kendal Clark. Senior Mady Lange was a second-team pick.
Algona was led by the Etherington sisters — senior Kameryn, a first-team choice, and freshman Lillian, a third-team selection.
Clear Lake senior Sara Faber was a second-team honoree.
In 1A, St. Edmond senior Jocy Timmerman was a third-team selection.
