JEWELL — The sequel matched up pretty well to the original, and South Hamilton is hopeful that the final installment in the trilogy later this month will be equally satisfying.

For the second time, the Hawks pummeled Heart of Iowa Conference rival Prairie City-Monroe, 10-0 in 5 innings, on Wednesday at the Mike Penning Athletic Complex. South Hamilton opened the season in mid-June by decking the Mustangs, 17-4.

South Hamilton (4-4, 4-4 HOIC) and PCM (3-6, 3-5 HOIC) will meet for a third time in a Class 2A District 13 quarterfinal in State Center on Saturday, July 11.

The Mustangs opted to give ace pitcher Derek Brown the night off on Wednesday, but Hawks’ head coach Kyle Galetich is confident he’ll get the ball when the two teams meet in the postseason. But South Hamilton got to Brown for seven runs in the first meeting.

“The good thing is we’ve faced Brown and we did OK,” Galetich said. “We won’t be intimidated, but we know we’ll need to bring the right approach to the plate.”

South Hamilton certainly got to PCM’s Beau Webb and Zeb Padgett on Wednesday. The two pitchers combined to give up 10 hits by seven different players. The Hawks did all of their damage in the later innings, scoring three in the third, one in the fourth and six in the fifth.

Quinton Grove, Carter Hewitt and Brandyn Feighner all had two hits and a combined three RBIs in the win. Grove roped a double, as did Tycin Barkema, who drove in a team-high three runs, and Lane Swenson. Elijah Balderas added a single and two RBIs, and Brock Galetich had a single and RBI.

Balderas was the recipient of the run support, as the sophomore right-hander went the distance on the bump to pick up the win. He limited PCM to just three hits — all singles — and stuck out four.

“Elijah did well,” Kyle Galetich said. “He threw strikes, he let the fielders do their work, and they did a good job behind him.”

Six of South Hamilton’s hits came in the game-ending fifth inning. Grove got the ball rolling with a single and he quickly scored on a Barkema RBI double. Hewitt, Swenson, Balderas and Feighner all laced hits as well.

Back-to-back bases loaded walks issued to Grove and Barkema wrapped up the rout.
