‘Funny game’ of baseball goes Hawks way against Norse
Swenson hits the walk-off game winner
JEWELL — Kyle Galetich is going to go ahead and chalk this one up to the idea that baseball is a funny game. And this time, he was actually chuckling.
Just one night after his South Hamilton team was thumped by previously winless Greene County, 13-2, the Hawks put together arguably their finest performance of the season to knock off 11-win Roland-Story, 3-2, on Friday at the Mike Penning Athletic Complex.
Yes, the same Roland-Story team that blanked South Hamilton, 9-0, last month.
“This shows that on any given night we can beat anybody,” Galetich said. “(Against Greene County) was maybe a good learning lesson that we also can’t overlook anybody.”
Lane Swenson delivered the game-winning base hit — a one-out, bases loaded single that plated Tycin Barkema in the bottom of the seventh inning. Swenson was one of four Hawks (5-5, 5-5 HOIC) with two hits. Brock Galetich and Carter Hewitt both had a single, double and RBI, while Brandyn Feighner went 2 for 2 at the bottom of the order.
Cade Flaugh and Elijah Balderas each added a single in the win.
Quinton Grove, a senior right-hander, made his first career start on the mound for South Hamilton, but it likely won’t be his last. Grove limited Roland-Story (11-5, 7-4 HOIC) to six hits en route to the complete-game victory.
“He threw a heck of a game,” Kyle Galetich said. “Q has been in so many big spots with state track and state basketball that I knew it wouldn’t bother him to go out there and throw. He’s just a tough kid and I couldn’t be happier for him.”
South Hamilton was at Nevada for a league doubleheader last night.
