THURSDAY’S BASEBALL BRIEFS

HR CARRIES BOONE PAST LYNX, 4-1: Morgan Smith launched a first-inning two-run home run to carry Boone past Webster City in a non-conference baseball game at Lynx Field in Webster City on Thursday.

The Toreadors (3-0) tacked on single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to create some breathing room.

The first-inning dinger ruined the varsity pitching debut of WCHS junior Chase Rattenborg, who took the loss. He allowed five hits and two earned runs; he walked five and struck out six.

WCHS (2-1) scored its only run in the bottom of the first on an RBI ground ball by Tyler Olson. It scored Rattenborg, who reached on a walk.

The Lynx mustered just three hits off Boone pitchers Matthew Mills and Ryan Hulse — singles by Rattenborg, Devon Stoakes and Beau Klaver. WCHS stranded six runners on base.

HAWKS SUFFER FIRST LOSS, 9-0: Roland-Story plated five first-inning runs and cruised to a Heart of Iowa Conference win over South Hamilton Thursday night in Story City.

After back-to-back victories earlier in the week, the Hawks (2-1, 2-1 HOIC) were limited to just three singles by Brock Galetich, Tycin Barkema and Freddie Lewis.

“We weren’t ready to play and we kind of had a wake-up call,” South Hamilton head coach Kyle Galetich said.
