WHITMORE LANDS SCHOLARSHIP: Garrett Whitmore, a member of the Webster City High School Class of 2020, recently received a $500 scholarship from the Iowa Track Guy Foundation.

A total of 47 high school seniors involved in track and field and cross country from across the state applied for the scholarship. Seven individuals — four girls and three boys — were selected from the pool of candidates.

A multiple-time state track and field qualifier for the Lynx, Whitmore placed third in the Class 3A 400-meter hurdles in 2019. He was considered the favorite in the event entering 2020, but the season was canceled in April due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Ranked No. 1 in his graduating class, Whitmore will attend Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in the fall.

HOLE IN ONE: Ryan Wearda of Webster City recorded a hole in one at the Webster City Links last week.

Wearda notched his ace on the 175-yard eighth hole with a 7-iron.
