Hawks will open fall slate against West Marshall

Madrid, CGD and Ogden other non-district foes

WEBSTER CITY — South Hamilton will go on the road five times and face six new opponents during the 2020 football season.

Schedules for the upcoming fall season were released by the Iowa High School Athletic Association on Thursday. The districts were released last month, but non-district opponents were unknown until the schedules were put out to the public.

“It’s kind of like what we expected,” South Hamilton head coach Corey Klemp said. “In terms of the four non-district games, it’s a good mix of teams and there was nothing out of left field.”

South Hamilton will open the campaign on Friday, Aug. 28 at home against West Marshall, a playoff qualifier a season ago. West Marshall will rejoin the Heart of Iowa Conference in the fall as well.

The Hawks, who put together a 6-3 record in 2019, will travel to Madrid, return home to face Clarion-Goldfield-Dows and then head to Ogden in Weeks 2-4 during the non-district portion of the slate.

South Hamilton handled Madrid (28-6) and Ogden (46-20) a season ago.

The final five weeks of the regular season will be Class 1A District 3 contests. South Hamilton will jump into the deep end right away with a Sept. 25 road trip to take on Dike-New Hartford, which went 10-1 and reached the state quarterfinals last fall.

A home date with South Hardin follows in Week 6, followed by back-to-back road trips to Hudson and East Marshall. The Hawks will close out the regular season at home against Aplington-Parkersburg on Oct. 23.

South Hamilton’s nine opponents combined to post a 36-48 record a season ago. Madrid, Clarion-Goldfield-Dows and East Marshall all went 1-8. Only West Marshall (6-4), Dike-New Hartford and South Hardin (5-4) posted winning records.

The new schedule will present some challenges, something Klemp feels his team welcomes.

“It will definitely create some interesting match-ups, but our guys will be ready to go,” he said. “It’s been quite a few years since we’ve played teams like Clarion or Hudson.”
