Swenson runs over 170-pound field at first tourney of season
Thompson the runner-up at 195, Hawks 8th
MANSON — Health and confidence can do wonders on the wrestling mat.
Take South Hamilton junior 170-pounder Lane Swenson, for example. After injury-plagued freshman and sophomore seasons, his body is finally cooperating. Now every time he steps onto the mat, he feels like he can win.
And, so far, he has.
Swenson ran his record to 4-0, all by pin, with a pair of quick victories to claim a cardboard bracket and gold medal at Saturday’s Doug Wood Invitational. He took out Ogden’s Justus Rude in 2:54 in the semifinals and then needed just 48 seconds to put St. Edmond’s Tyler Rossmanith on his back in the finals.
“To have that confidence going onto the mat with you, that can literally change an entire match,” South Hamilton head coach Dan Brodie said. “Lane has that confidence and he wants this very badly this year. What’s great about this is he was able to come away with the championship, but he’s also got a lot of things he can work on. I don’t think he’s reached his full potential.”
Swenson’s title highlighted an eighth-place finish in the 11-team field for South Hamilton. Trevor Thompson (195) also reached the finals for the Hawks, who scored 84 points.
Manson-Northwest Webster won its own tournament with 184 points. South Central Calhoun (165) was the runner-up, followed by West Bend-Mallard (133), Alta-Aurelia (126) and Hampton-Dumont (118).
Thompson secured a first-period fall and 7-3 semifinal-round win over South Central Calhoun’s Jayden Soard. Manson-Northwest Webster’s John Schuttler fended off a flurry of Thompson shots late in the championship bout to hang on for a 5-3 decision.
“That was a fantastic match for Trevor, exactly the type of match we need early in the season,” Brodie said of the final. “He’s frustrated he lost, but he knows that’s a quality opponent and those types of matches he needs and he’s going to have to win if he’s going to realize his goals at the end of the year.”
Brent Greenfield (182) and Colton Willis (220) both went 2-2 and finished fourth. Justin Wilson (132) won his opening-round bout and placed sixth.
South Hamilton was open at four weights (113, 120, 126 and 285).
“I thought our effort was strong and where we struggled it wasn’t for a lack of effort,” Brodie said. “It’s just going to take some time.”
