JEWELL — A lopsided second quarter and an offensive show from sophomore dynamo Reagan Barkema ensured that the sixth-ranked (Class 3A) Roland-Story girls’ basketball team could put it on cruise control in the second half here on Tuesday.

The Norsemen outscored South Hamilton 24-7 in the second period to build a 23-point halftime advantage, as they rolled to a 67-37 Heart of Iowa Conference victory on Coach Jim Marsh Court.

Barkema rained in five 3-pointers and scored a game-high 25 points.

South Hamilton (2-3, 1-1 HOIC) shot the ball just fine — 49 percent, to be exact — but didn’t get enough shots thanks to 25 turnovers in the 30-point setback.

“Roland-Story wants to speed you up and capitalize on mistakes, and that’s exactly what happened to us,” South Hamilton head coach Mark Henderson said. “We had some stretches where we played well and hung with them, but we had too many bad moments that turned into easy baskets for them.

“Barkema is just a really tough girl to guard. She’s a nice player.”

Reece Johnson, another sophomore for Roland-Story (5-0, 2-0 HOIC), pitched in 14 points.

Hallee Feaker and Caleigh Hewitt scored eight points each for South Hamilton. Hewitt also pulled down six rebounds, while Feaker collected three steals.

Aneesa Balderas added six points in the loss.

South Hamilton will face Nevada on Friday and Henderson is confident his squad will regroup.

“I love the fight in this group,” he said. “I have no doubt we’ll be ready to go on Friday against Nevada.”

The conference contest is scheduled for a 6 p.m. tip-off in Jewell.
