Lynx suffer setbacks against Cowboys, Cadets

No. 1 Phetxoumphone goes 2-0, breaks school record for fastest fall

IOWA FALLS — Top-ranked (Class 2A) 106-pounder Cam Phetxoumphone may want to learn how to pace himself a little better.

Yeah, that’s a joke.

The truth is, Webster City’s sophomore star barely had time to break a sweat here Thursday night. Phetxoumphone — last season’s fifth-place state-tournament finisher at the lightest weight — used up just 1 minute, 46 seconds in his first bout and then broke the school record for the fastest fall in his nightcap.

Five seconds. Five seconds!

The former record of six seconds was set by Ryan Ferrari at a Class 2A sectional meet in 2016.

After his dusting of Clarion-Goldfield-Dows’ Kaeden Langfitt in the first period, Phetxoumphone rushed Iowa Falls-Alden’s Logan Kobe at the whistle and tossed him to his back before the Cadet even knew what happened.

“He’s similar to (2019 state champion) Drake (Doolittle), somebody with high, high talent and it’s good to have somebody pushing the team,” WCHS head coach Chad Hisler said of Phetxoumphone. “He’s focused and he wrestled really well.”

With as many as nine grapplers in the lineup with no or limited varsity experience, WCHS (0-2, 0-2 NCC) didn’t have the consistency or firepower to stay with either North Central Conference foe.

CGD (2-0, 2-0 NCC) won 11 of the 14 weights, six by fall, in a 55-18 victory over the Lynx. Iowa Falls-Alden (1-1, 1-1 NCC) matched the 11 wins and piled up eight falls in its 61-16 rout over the Lynx.

Despite the lopsided scores, Hisler attempted to stay upbeat afterwards. He’s looking at the big picture.

“We’re pretty much where I thought we were … up and down the lineup we had kids do some positive things, but there were a lot of mistakes we can correct,” he said. “We have a lot of potential, so we can’t let this get us down.”

Chase Rattenborg (132) and Trey Shannon (285) added pins for the Lynx against CGD. Shannon flattened Daniel Chavez in 3:02 early in the dual and Rattenborg dispatched Ben Oehlert in just 34 seconds later on.

Ryan Zuetlau (126) tacked on a fall over IF-A’s Caleb Robinson in 1:17 in the nightcap. Brayden Henely (113), one of four freshmen in the lineup, collected his first varsity win over the Cadets’ Jacob Michaelson by major decision, 9-1.

CGD went home blemish-free. The Cowboys built a big lead and then held on late to take down the Cadets, 45-31.

The WCHS junior varsity squad found plenty of success on the night with 10 victories, nine of them by fall.

Codey Berg went 3-0 with a pair of pins. Gabriel Killian, Skyler Scott and Curtis Heuton all went 2-0 and combined for six more pins. Nick Gasca decked his one opponent.

WCHS will turn its focus to Saturday’s DC-G Mustang Invite, which will get underway in Grimes at 10 a.m. The Lynx JV squad will head to the Des Moines North/Hoover tournament, which will start at 9 a.m.
