Hawks lose early lead, game

ROCKWELL CITY — Ahead 21-9 after the first quarter, the South Hamilton boys’ basketball team scored just 20 more points the remainder of the way and watched South Central Calhoun storm on by here Tuesday night.

The Titans answered with a 21-4 second-quarter run and forced 33 South Hamilton turnovers in a 65-41 victory.

“They came out in the second quarter and extended their zone and really tried to trap and play passing lanes. We didn’t handle that adjustment very well,” South Hamilton head coach Matt Juber said. “We had way too many turnovers and the guys know that’s something we have to clean up.”

Turnovers and foul shooting were issues for the Hawks (0-1). They went just 6 of 20 at the charity stripe and were outscored by 10 points at the line.

The two teams combined for 45 fouls and 49 free throw attempts.

Zane Neubaum led SCC (2-0) with 16 points, Cole Corey pitched in 12 and Brennan Holder produced 11 more.

Doran Lutjen was the only Hawk to reach double figures; he poured in 14 points to go along with a team-high seven rebounds. Cade Balvanz finished with eight points, but the senior center was hampered by fouls throughout the contest.

Aaron Hegland added six points on a pair of 3-pointers and two steals. Quinton Grove had the Hawks other 3, as well as six rebounds and four assists. Carter Hewitt registered four points and six caroms.

South Hamilton matched its regular season loss total of the past two seasons combined, but with the graduation of three multiple-year starters, Juber knows his team is going to have to learn to walk before it can run.

“This was a night of firsts for a lot of guys, myself included,” he said. “While we aren’t going to use that as an excuse, we know there will be bumps in the road and we have to figure out how to overcome those obstacles and put together a four-quarter game.”

The Hawks will open up Heart of Iowa Conference play against Greene County in Jefferson on Friday.
