JEWELL — It was pin or be pinned inside the South Hamilton High School gymnasium Tuesday night.

The South Hamilton wrestling team opened its season with a pair of dual-meet losses. The Hawks fell to Heart of Iowa Conference rival North Polk, 42-30, and then dropped a 54-24 decision to Woodward-Granger in the final dual.

Open at four weights (113 pounds, 120, 126 and 220), South Hamilton had to maximize its points at the other 10 weights. Of the 18 contested matches in the two duals, the Hawks won seven of them, all by fall. They lost 11, also all by fall.

“It was the first dual of the season and we don’t have our best lineup put together yet,” South Hamilton head coach Dan Brodie said. “We’re still pretty green in some spots, but I was pleased with our effort and I thought our veterans did a really nice job.”

Eli Angove (138), Lane Swenson (170) and Trevor Thompson (195) all went 2-0 for the Hawks and combined for five of the falls. Jose Galdeano (145) and Colton Willis (285) also picked up wins on the mat, while Adan Perez (106) earned a forfeit victory.

Thompson, a returning district qualifier, needed just 1 minute, 56 seconds to run through his two foes. He disposed of North Polk’s Joseph Klein in 54 seconds and then needed only 1:02 to show Woodward-Granger’s Devan Brown the lights.

Swenson rolled through the Comets’ Cale Engebretson and W-G’s Kolby Kogarty in a combined 2:09.

“(Thompson and Swenson) have been doing this for a while,” Brodie said. “You’re not going to win every match, but I want them to approach every match knowing that the team is looking to them to show leadership.”

Willis drew the short stick against W-G in the form of top-ranked (Class 1A at 220) and defending state champion Cody Fisher, an Iowa State commit who bumped up to get a match. Willis opened his night by decking North Polk’s Cole Sanger in 1:04.

“The Fisher kid is in a class of his own right now,” Brodie said. “But I told Colton that’s the best kid he’s going to wrestle all season, so to take what he could from it and move on.”

Galdeano put W-G’s Brayden Simons flat in 3:02.
