WEBSTER CITY — Alayna Finucan received a deserved pat on the back from the coaches in the Class 4A West District on Monday.

But did the Webster City sophomore get everything that probably should have been coming to her? No, not even close.

Following a sophomore season in which she broke her own single-season school record for digs and ranked among the leaders in 4A, Finucan was named to the Iowa Girls Coaches Association all-district team out west. Of the 15 players honored in the district, Finucan was one of only two sophomores to make the cut. The other 13 were juniors and seniors.

However, she was left off the two all-state teams and the honorable mention all-state squad. Which begs the question: What exactly does she have to do to claim an all-state accolade?

With 520 digs on the season, Finucan ranked second in 4A, trailing only second-team all-state member Trinity Zika of Marion, who played in 15 more sets. Finucan actually held the advantage in digs per set; her 5.59 average ranked third in 4A.

Finucan, a first-team all-North Central Conference award winner, became just the fourth WCHS player all-time to reach 1,000 career digs in the team’s regional semifinal loss to eventual state qualifier Waverly-Shell Rock. Barring injury or some other unforeseen incident, she should become the program’s all-time leader during her junior season next fall.
