Hawks break even during 6-match tourney

No. 6 Cowgirls roll to team title at home

CLARION — A busy, 13-match week ended for the South Hamilton volleyball team here on Saturday.

The Hawks went 3-3 at the Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Invite and take an 8-5 overall mark into the second week of the season.

South Hamilton earned 2-0 wins over Harris-Lake Park (21-14, 21-16) and Eagle Grove (21-4, 21-17), and a 2-1 victory over Belmond-Klemme (16-21-21-15, 15-7). The Hawks fell 2-0 to sixth-ranked (Class 2A) and tournament champion CGD (21-6, 21-10) and North Butler (21-12, 21-18), and also dropped a 2-1 decision to Clear Lake (17-21, 21-17, 15-11).

Complete statistics from the tournament weren’t available as of press time.

South Hamilton was most dominant in the straight sets romp over Eagle Grove, its second triumph of the season against the Eagles. The Hawks hit .389 and were led by Hailey Diersen with five kills. Mackenzy Grady, Emily Greenfield and Caleigh Hewitt all lashed three kills, and Greenfield also collected nine assists.

Hewitt was the primary weapon against Belmond-Klemme with six of the team’s 15 kills. Greenfield handed out 12 assists.

CGD won all 12 sets it played and was led by all-state attacker Morgan Middleton, who cranked out 59 kills.

South Hamilton will travel to Eldora on Tuesday for a non-conference triangular with South Hardin and North Tama.
