Steen, Olson combine for 3-hitter in Lynx road win over Garrigan

ALGONA — The Webster City baseball team didn’t exactly rip the cover off of the ball, but it did enough to remove the bitter taste that lingered after a loss here Saturday evening.

Facing former North Central Conference rival Algona Garrigan, the Lynx scored one run in each of the first four innings and that was enough to dispose of the Golden Bears, 4-2.

It was a nice turnaround for WCHS (14-7), which dropped its first conference game of the season to Humboldt on Thursday.

Dylan Steen tossed five innings of two-hit ball to earn the win on the mound. The senior won his fifth consecutive start by striking out nine before handing the ball over to Caleb Olson in the sixth and seventh innings. Olson gave up only one hit.

Steen also had two of the Lynx five hits. His base hit in the opening frame scored Tyler Olson.

Caleb Olson, Beau Klaver and Sean Carver all smacked one hit. Klaver’s third-inning base knock plated Caleb Olson.

Ty McKinney touched the dish twice. He reached on an error in the second and eventually scored on a wild pitch. The eighth grader was then plunked with a pitch in the fourth, moved over to third and then raced home on Tyler Olson’s RBI ground ball.

Joseph Meis took the loss for Garrigan (12-15). Alex Mammen accounted for two of the team’s three hits and Brad Capesius drove in one run.

WCHS will head to Fort Dodge this evening to take on St. Edmond.
