Stoakes, Kasch, Goings and Finucan 2 hits in win

ALGONA — Second verse, same as the first.

With the exception of second-ranked (Class 3A) Humboldt, which it hasn’t faced yet, the Webster City softball team rolled through the North Central Conference the first time through. Round 2 began Wednesday night and not much changed.

Three-run outbursts in the third and seventh innings propelled the Lynx (14-4, 7-0 NCC) to a 7-3 victory over Algona and kept head coach Jess Howard’s club unbeaten in the league.

WCHS narrowly fended off the Bulldogs (11-7, 4-4 NCC) late last month, 3-2, and Howard says her players knew simply showing up for the rematch wouldn’t be good enough.

“You can’t take anything for granted and beating them once doesn’t mean you’re going to beat them for a second time,” Howard said. “So seeing the girls focused and ready to put it to them right away, it was great.”

Kelly Stoakes, Leah Kasch, Tatum Goings and Alayna Finucan all had two hits and one RBI in the win. Zoey Woodle and Jenna Miller added singles and Taylor McKinney drove in a run.

Goings, Finucan and Stoakes all laced RBI singles in the second inning to stake WCHS to an early 3-0 lead. Algona answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame and then tied it at 3 in fifth.

Kasch led off the sixth inning with the Lynx only extra-base hit, a double, and two batters later Miller bounced out to shortstop to bring Kasch to the dish with the winning run.

Finucan and Stoakes led off the seventh with back-to-back singles and Kasch later delivered an RBI base knock.
