Olson blanks Bulldogs, now 6-0 with 0.40 ERA

ALGONA — An eighth grader and a sophomore stole the show for the North Central Conference leading Webster City baseball team here Wednesday night.

Translation: The future looks awfully bright.

The not yet in high school CJ Hisler went 3 for 3 with three RBIs at the bottom of the lineup and Tyler Olson remained perfect on the mound in the Lynx 13-0, 5-inning trouncing of Algona.

WCHS (10-5, 5-0 NCC) dismissed the Bulldogs (4-10, 2-3 NCC) by scoring 12 runs in the fourth and fifth innings, a message that even head coach Adison Kehoe wasn’t expecting.

“I’ll be honest, I am a little surprised,” he said. “But the boys were eager. We were close to a full week since our last game, so the boys were ready to get back on the field.”

Hisler actually scored the only run WCHS would need in the third inning on a wild pitch. Olson didn’t need anything else, as he limited Algona to just one hit — a first-inning single by Carson Devine — and struck out six.

Olson improved to 6-0 with a 0.40 ERA on the season.

“The game seems to slow down for him,” Kehoe said about Olson. “He’s just a pitcher in every sense of the word from his location to throwing his off-speed pitches at the right time … to see where he’s at as a sophomore is pretty incredible.”

WCHS plated six runs in the fourth all with two outs. Hisler got it started with an RBI single and Caleb Olson later drove in two more with a base hit.

Two-run knocks by Hisler and Sean Carver keyed a six-run fifth inning that sent the teams home early.

With his three-hit night, Hisler upped his batting average to .388, third-best on the team.

“CJ is pretty potent right now in that No. 9 hole,” Kehoe said. “He’s doing things right now that a lot of normal eighth graders can’t do.”

WCHS finished with nine hits, all singles. Carver had two, while Tyler Olson, Devon Stoakes, Dylan Steen and Ty McKinney all had one. Steen added an RBI.
