Lynx go 3 for 3, Miller cranks 2 HRs

Miller, Stoakes and Hopp all winners inside circle, WCHS?improves to 13-4

MARTENSDALE — Weekend tournaments haven’t always treated Jess Howard’s Webster City softball team well. But when she found the Martensdale-St. Marys Tournament three years ago, the Lynx head coach hit her own home run.

For whatever reason, the Lynx feel right at home so far away from home.

WCHS extended its winning streak to seven over the past three seasons at the tournament with three victories on Saturday. Jenna Miller, Kelly Stoakes and Atlanta Hopp all pitched complete games to claim the wins, the first time in perhaps forever that three different Lynx pitchers have won games on the same day.

“The girls did a great job all around and showed that we’ve got a team that’s going to play well whether we’ve got Jenna, Kelly or Atlanta in the circle,” Howard said. “It was a good day for the girls to showcase everything they’ve got.”

WCHS (13-4), which has won five straight overall, topped Southeast Valley, 2-0, in its opener. The Lynx then bounced AHSTW, 9-3, and closed their day by avenging a loss to host MSM, 10-5. MSM beat Lynx in Webster City seven days earlier, 6-5.

Miller threw a one-hit gem and bashed a seventh-inning home run to give herself an insurance run against Southeast Valley. The Jaguars’ Mady Jaeschke broke up Miller’s no-hit bid with a lead-off single in the fifth, but the WCHS sophomore was in control throughout. She fanned four and issued just one walk.

A Leah Kasch RBI sacrifice fly in the first inning put the Lynx in front 1-0.

Miller also doubled off SEV pitcher Mackenzie Crampton. Hopp, Zoey Woodle, Taylor McKinney and Alayna Finucan all singled.

A six-run second inning, aided by three errors, sent WCHS on its way to the six-run victory over AHSTW. Finucan and Woodle both drove in runs on ground balls and Kasch delivered the key hit in the frame — a two-run base knock.

Kasch went 3 for 4 with three RBIs out of the clean-up spot in the order. Stoakes was 2 for 4 with a double and RBI, and Woodle lashed two singles. McKinney, Hopp and Tatum Goings all had one hit.

Stoakes got the nod in the circle and fanned six. AHSTW collected nine hits off the freshman hurler.

Another six-run outburst, this time in the third inning, put WCHS on a path towards a perfect day in the finale against MSM. After falling behind 2-0 early, the Lynx scored nine runs in the third and fourth innings to gain the upper-hand.

Five consecutive hits, capped by Miller’s second dinger of the day — a two-run blast — led to the marathon third inning. Woodle, McKinney, Kasch and Cynthia Whitehill all roped singles in front of Miller.

“(Miller) also had a double that was real close to being a home run,” Howard said. She did a great job of seeing the ball and hitting it strong to left field all day.

“We had a lot of girls that executed at the plate. We did a little bit of everything from small ball to base rips in a row to some power hitting. It was good to see the girls put everything together on a Saturday.”

Whitehill was 3 for 4 at the dish to lead the way. Kasch added two more hits to her haul. Finucan pitched in a single.

Hopp was touched for just three hits, but walked four. The Lynx defense also made four errors behind her.

WCHS will get back to North Central Conference play this evening when it hosts Hampton-Dumont at 7:30 p.m.
