Jacoby erupts with 3 hits, Hawks rough up Cubs

SH maintains its perch atop HOIC?softball standings

NEVADA — The smile returned to the face of Leah Jacoby here last night, as she played a starring role in yet another South Hamilton softball victory.

Hitting in the No. 9 spot, Jacoby went 3 for 3 at the dish with a triple and RBI to help the Hawks dismantle Heart of Iowa Conference rival Nevada, 8-0.

“Leah has been struggling the last couple of weeks, so it was tremendous to see her come alive,” South Hamilton head coach Harry McMaken said. “She was just awesome.”

The lower half of South Hamilton’s order supplied six of the team’s 10 hits, including all four extra base hits. Jessi Harms returned from a hamstring injury and ripped a triple that drove in two runs. Hailey Diersen and Lily Skartvedt both roped an RBI double.

“(Monday) it was the bottom of the order that came through big time,” McMaken said.

Krista Swenson added a single and two RBIs. Cortney Harris and Breanne Diersen both singled as well.

League-leader South Hamilton (14-6, 9-1 HOIC) did all of its damage in the second (three runs) and fifth (five runs) innings.

Taylor Volkmann threw her second one-hitter in a span of three days. Sydney Mosinski broke up the no-nit bid with a lead-off infield single in the seventh inning. One inning earlier Lily Skartvedt, the Hawks’ centerfielder, kept the Cubs (5-15, 2-8 HOIC) hitless by making a diving catch on a shallow pop-up off the bat of Ellie Gray.

Volkmann struck out 14 and walked three.
