The Hawks were out to right what they perceived to be a wrong Wednesday evening at the Mike Penning Athletic Complex and, oh boy, did they ever succeed.

Twelve hits and two innings of at least four runs were the highlights, as South Hamilton stepped on the throat of Gilbert early and never relented in an 11-1, 6-inning Heart of Iowa Conference victory. The route helped to alleviate the frustration that came in a 2-1 loss to the Tigers back on June 5 in Gilbert.

The seventh home run of the season and third in two days for Cortney Harris served as a final statement. Her blast to left-center in the sixth was a two-run walk-off dinger.

South Hamilton (17-9, 10-3 HOIC) led 2-0 after one inning and 7-0 after two. Four more runs in the sixth put it away.

Breanne Diersen went 3 for 4 with a double and RBI at the top of the Hawks’ order. Taylor Volkmann smacked two singles and drove in two runs. Jessi Harms roped a pair of doubles and collected one RBI, while Leah Jacoby had a single, double and RBI.

Three RBIs from Harris and another from Emma Lewis helped to leave Gilbert (13-15, 6-5 HOIC) in the rearview mirror.

Volkmann was happy for the offensive onslaught, but the senior pitcher didn’t need it. She surrendered just three hits and struck out 12. A Halli Nissen RBI double in the sixth prevented Volkmann from tossing a shutout.

South Hamilton will close out the regular season this evening at Prairie City-Monroe.
