Lynx get by Humboldt, wrap up second in NCC duals behind Clear Lake

Ferrell shreds short course, fires 2-under 34 to win medalist by five strokes

HUMBOLDT — Nathan Ferrell is not a big kid, but you’d never know it standing down the fairway and watching how far his ball can fly off the tee.

He can keep up with the long hitters, and he can simply overpower shorter courses.

Which is exactly what he did on Tuesday.

Facing the 2,998-yard, par-36 Humboldt Country Club, Ferrell essentially turned it into a pitch and putt. The Webster City senior opened his round with a birdie and added another late in his round for a 2-under-par 34 and medalist honor in the Lynx North Central Conference victory over Humboldt.

With Ferrell’s low round, five shots clear of his closest competitor, WCHS was able to nudge past Humboldt, 162-165. The victory clinched the runner-up spot in the conference dual-meet standings behind Clear Lake.

The 445-yard, par-5 first hole was no match for Ferrell, who quickly moved into the red. He remained at 1-under until he got to the short 304-yard eighth hole that resulted in another birdie.

Humboldt’s Jack Arndt was the meet runner-up with a 3-over 39. Teammate Jamison Heinz shared the third position with the Lynx Drake Doering; they both carded 40s.

Trey Lyons added a 43 and Chase Rattenborg completed the WCHS team score with a 45. Garrett Arnold and Devon Stoakes added matching 48s.

The WCHS junior varsity squad also beat Humboldt, 190-211. Drew Schwering led that Lynx group with a 44, while Josh Casady and Jackson Leman both shot 47.

It’s all 18-hole tournaments the rest of the way for WCHS, starting with today’s Lynx Invite at Briggs Woods Golf Course at 1:30 p.m.

The Lynx will travel to the Carroll Country Club for the Kuemper Invite on Saturday, followed by the NCC tournament at the Mason City Country Club on Monday to close out the regular season.
