Lynx 0-4 at 1A regional

WATERLOO — The Webster City girls’ tennis team saw its season end at yesterday’s Class 1A Region 4 singles and doubles tournament hosted by Waterloo Columbus.

The Lynx were unable to come up with a victory, but it wasn’t for a lack of effort.

The freshman doubles team of Kayley Wibholm and Mackenzie Burney put Iowa Falls-Alden’s Olivia Butt and Nelly Chmurova on upset alert early with a 6-1 win in the opening set. But the Cadet duo rebounded to take the next two sets 7-5, 6-2 to advance.

“Kayley and Mackenzie played their best match of the year through two sets,” WCHS head coach Mark Fisher said. “They really showed the improvements they’ve made, they just got a bit tight in the third and couldn’t finish.”

McKenna Dinsdale and Makaylee Draeger fell in straight sets to South Hardin’s Sarah England and Isabelle Sisson 6-2, 6-3.

WCHS singles players Hannah Parr and Teagan Gourley both went down in straight sets as well. Parr dropped a 6-0, 6-2 decision to Emma Spieker of South Hardin. Gourley made Grundy Center’s Alivia Brandhorst work in a 6-4, 6-2 match.

“The results don’t always show it, but we got a lot better this year and we saw some good young players start to develop at the varsity and (junior varsity) level,” Fisher said.
