And that’s twice more than she’d ever heard that after her jumps.

The Webster City junior won the long jump by more than a foot at the Wildcat Relays and in the process vaulted into the top five in Class 3A with less than a month to go before the best in the class convene for the state meet.

Following a first attempt that measured 16 feet, 7 inches — easily good enough to win the event — Hay uncorked a career-best 17-11⁄2 on her second jump to vault up to fourth in 3A. Had she reached that distance four days earlier, she would have qualified for the Drake Relays.

Hay added leaps that measured 16-11 and 17-0.

Teammate and WCHS senior Zoey Woodle took the silver in the long jump with a leap of 16-1.

“Zoey went 16-1 and Ashlyn had the three best jumps of her career, and to do that in the conditions was fantastic,” WCHS head coach Clint Howard said. “(Assistant) coach (Brad) Van Deer has been doing a fantastic job with them.”

The 1-2 finish gave the Lynx a solid start to a meet in which they scored 76 points and finished fourth. Humboldt ran away with its own relays title by claiming nine gold medals and 20 top-three finishes in all. The Wildcats scored 190 points, miles ahead of runner-up Algona (1251⁄2). Hampton-Dumont (86) took third.

WCHS brought home five medals, four of them in individual events.

Woodle added a runner-up finish in the 100-meter dash, as she leaned across the finish line in 13.60 seconds. Freshman Shelby Queen, who splits her time between track and soccer, fared well in the 400; she was second as well in 1:09.51.

Jacie Crutcher added a third-place finish in the 3,000 (12:58.53). Bronze also went to the shuttle hurdle relay (1:21.99) of Tatum Goings, Brynna Croy, Kamryn Pruismann and Jesslyn Messerly.
