Lynx girls miss early chances, fall to Mohawks
Gallentine scores lone Webster City?goal in second half
MASON CITY — Three chances at the goal in the opening five minutes gave the Webster City girls’ soccer team some early confidence here yesterday evening.
And then Mason City squashed it with an avalanche of goals.
After coming up empty on those early opportunities, the Lynx watched Mason City rifle off five first-half goals and then six more after the intermission en route to an 11-1 victory. The match ended with 11:57 remaining when the Mohawks went up by 10 goals.
“We started off with three excellent goal-scoring opportunities,” WCHS head coach Paul Baedke said. “After that Mason City tightened it up and played a lot tougher. But we have a young team and they showed immense improvement from our last game against (Class 1A seventh-ranked) Gilbert.”
WCHS (0-2) avoided the shutout 13 minutes into the second half when Morgan Gallentine took the ball through the defense and down the field before blasting a shot into the back of the net.
Halle Espinosa peeled off four goals, three of them coming in the opening 30 minutes, for Mason City (1-0). Emily Lunning added a hat trick, keyed by back-to-back goals in an eight-minute span of the first half.
Emma Garrett, Valerie Nelson, Cami Despenas and Gwen Sewell all had one goal for the Mohawks.
WCHS goalkeeper Josselin Guendulay was once again under constant pressure. She collected 13 saves.
The Lynx will head to the Boone tournament on Saturday.
