JEWELL — When South Hamilton wants to win medals and pile up the team points, it can. All head coach Darrell Paulsen has to do is take his horses out of the stable and let them gallop.

Logan Peters. Conner Hill. Cole Berg. Quinton Grove. Freddie Lewis. Several others could be added to the list as well.

The usual suspects were in the spotlight again for South Hamilton at last night’s Hawk Relays, as they provided the bulk of the points in a third-place team finish. In front of the home crowd and competing in blustery and frigid conditions, the Hawks put up 79 points to place behind Des Moines Christian and North Polk, which shared the team title with 128.

Hampton-Dumont (651⁄2) and West Hancock (53) rounded out the top five. A total of eight teams took part.

Hill, a first-year track athlete, won his first individual gold medal, as he fended off a large field at the tape to claim the 800-meter run in 2:03.80. Berg wasn’t far back in third in 2:07.80.

Usually the king of the 800, Peters went back to the event that won him a state title a season ago. He and Grove cruised around the track in the mile and claimed the first and second medals. Peters crossed in 4:49.80, Grove in 4:52.00.

A potential Drake Relays qualifier in the 4×800, South Hamilton put the band back together and won that event easily as well. Peters, Grove, Berg and Hill turned in an 8:47.60.

The Hawks collected two more individual bronze medals from Brandyn Feighner and Freddie Lewis. Feighner soared 19 feet, 51⁄4 inches in the long jump. Lewis completed the 400 in 55.50 seconds.
