HUMBOLDT — What is the best way to describe the Webster City boys’ track and field team at this juncture early in the season?

Consistent.

You could also go with consistently good.

The Lynx won a meet-best 14 medals Friday night and placed second behind host Humboldt at the Charlie Bunn Relays. The Wildcats secured 13 top-three finishes, but hoarded the gold with seven event victories en route to 184 points. WCHS, which took two events, compiled 1421⁄2 to easily outdistance third-place finisher Boone (103). Algona (96) and Pocahontas Area (881⁄2) rounded out the top five.

“It was another great team effort,” WCHS head coach Chad Hisler said following his team’s second consecutive runner-up result during the outdoor season. “We were solid up and down the lineup.”

Career-best performances were sprinkled throughout the lineup, as 11 individuals collected multiple medals in individual events and as a part of relays. Sprinters Lincoln LaSourd and Garrett Whitmore again led the way with four each, while Kaiyu Levongkhom, Alex Hooker, John Piaszynski, Trey Mathis, Carson Struchen and Max Harfst all piled up three.

WCHS finished in the top three in all seven relays, keyed by victories in the 4×100-meter relay and distance medley.

Whitmore, Mathis, Struchen and LaSourd worked the sticks well and reached the finish line in the 400 relay in 45.42 seconds. Harfst, normally the Lynx 4×800 anchor and resident open 800 leader, took over the anchor of the distance medley and led the group to a time of 3:43.35. Whitmore and Struchen ran the 200 legs of the medley, while LaSourd was on the 400.

Levongkhom had arguably his best night in a Lynx uniform with career-best performances in the long jump (19 feet, 23⁄4 inches) and 110 high hurdles (16.83). He was third in the field event and second on the track.

LaSourd was just off his best-ever time in the 200; his clocking of 23.48 was second in the field.

WCHS was also second in the 4×800 (8:55.92) and sprint medley (1:40.32).

Individual bronze medals went to J.J. Moore in the shot put (47-10), Hooker in the 800 (2:11.51), Piaszynski in the 1,600 (5:03.74) and Whitmore in the 400 low hurdles (56.56).

The 4×200 (1:38.02), 4×400 (3:43.75) and shuttle hurdle (1:08.88) relays were all third as well.

WCHS will return to the track this afternoon for the Southeast Valley Invite in Gowrie. Field events will begin at 4:30 p.m.
