WEBSTER CITY — Ballard has one of the premier Class 1A girls’ tennis programs in the state, something Webster City head coach Mark Fisher was well aware of long before his team stepped onto the courts to face the Bombers Friday afternoon.

And Ballard certainly lived up to those expectations.

The unbeaten Bombers (8-0) looked right at home at the WCHS courts, as they steamrolled their way through the Lynx quickly for an 11-0 victory.

“You have to give Ballard a bunch of credit,” Fisher said. “They are the gold standard on our schedule. It was good for our young team to see veteran players who are well coached with both great skill and great tactical ability, and it gives them something to strive towards.”

Ballard claimed seven 10-0 victories.

Only Teagan Gourley and Mackenzie Burney were able to steal a game during singles play for WCHS (0-6). Gourley dropped a 10-1 decision to Lindsay Kaldenberg at No. 2, while Burney fell by the same score to Jenna Hernandez at No. 5.

“Despite the results, I saw a lot of encouraging things,” Fisher said. “I thought we played with much more effort than we did (on Thursday) against Iowa Falls and played some really great points. I thought Mackenzie and (No. 4 player) Kayley (Wibholm) both played some great defense in their singles and made their girls play multiple great shots. I was really impressed with the adjustments Teagan was able to make throughout her match.

“While it may not seem like it, I thought this was a great step.”

WCHS won just three games during the five doubles matches, two of those coming from the No. 3 team of Wibholm and Burney.

The Lynx will be back at home on Tuesday to host Boone at 4:30 p.m.
