Jake Hilmer, D.J. Carton share Mr. Basketball honor
WEBSTER CITY — North Linn’s Jake Hilmer and Bettendorf’s D.J. Carton were named co-Mr. Basketball by the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association today.
Of the 49 media members and coaches that voted, Hilmer and Carton received an equal number of votes. The decision was ultimately made to name co-winners for the third time in the 39-year history of the award. Randy Kraayenbrink of Paullina and Ted Burbach of Dubuque Wahlert shared it in 1982, as did future Kansas teammates Kirk Heinrich and Nick Collison in 1999.
Hilmer set state records for career assists and steals and scored more than 2,000 points. He’ll play basketball and baseball at Upper Iowa.
Carton, a future Ohio State Buckeye, ranks among the top 30 recruits in the country. He had more than 25 Division I scholarship offers.
