Lynx win 3, lose 3 without Woodle at Algona

ALGONA — Playing without one of its starting outside hitters due to injury, the Webster City volleyball team put together a makeshift lineup and held its own at the Algona Invite on Saturday.

Senior Zoey Woodle injured her ankle in practice on Friday and that forced head coach Jess Howard to work her magic with the lineup.

“The girls adapted really well,” Howard said after the Lynx went 3-3 at the tournament. “We were able to come together, which is not always easy. We had a couple girls with limited to no varsity experience playing for the first time and they did their jobs and understood their roles.”

WCHS (6-8) knocked off North Union twice (20-22, 21-15, 15-10 and 21-19, 21-18), as well as Spirit Lake (21-17, 9-21, 15-11). It dropped 2-1 decisions to Algona (21-19, 15-21, 15-7) and Sioux Center (19-21, 21-15, 15-8), and a 2-0 contest to 12th-ranked (Class 2A) Lake Mills (21-17, 21-11).

Just two days after being swept by Algona, WCHS opened the day against the Bulldogs and showed plenty of fight, Howard said. The two three-set losses brought optimism for the coach.

“We had our chances at winning more matches,” she said. “Sioux Center is a very good team … our legs got to us a little bit, maybe not necessarily being in shape to play that many games and that’s on me.”

WCHS again relied on its talented front-row duo of Adalie Schwandt and Kamry Dawson to provide the bulk of the power. Schwandt hammered a team-high 38 kills and hit .192, while Dawson swatted 31 kills and hit .178.

“They did a great job of handling the ball a lot,” Howard said. “Our setters did a good job of identifying where they were at on the court and got the ball in a position where they could swing hard and do some damage.”

The Lynx hit .067 as a team with 93 kills on the day. Cynthia Whitehill piled up 54 assists and Morgan Gallentine tallied 29.

Grace Hoversten was the team’s defensive force at net with 16 blocks, including seven against Sioux Center. The junior also lashed 13 kills.

Libero Alayna Finucan owned the back row with 58 digs. Atlanta Hopp added 29 and Schwandt finished with 23.

Schwandt also had a solid day behind the service line. She made good on all 59 of her attempts and recorded five aces. Gallentine also had five aces, while Hopp was 33 for 33 with four aces.
