Hawks claim South Central Calhoun Invite title, push record to 18-2 on season entering HOIC

LAKE CITY — South Hamilton continued to roll on the volleyball court on Saturday, as the Hawks collected six more victories and claimed the title at the South Central Calhoun Invite.

South Hamilton won 12 of 13 sets and earned 2-0 sweeps over Audubon (21-10, 21-16), Belmond-Klemme (21-13, 21-8), Greene County (21-16, 21-16), Pocahontas Area (21-17, 21-10) and IKM-Manning (21-7, 21-14). Host and tournament runner-up South Central Calhoun gave the Hawks their only real dogfight, but they prevailed in three sets (21-19, 9-21, 15-12).

At 18-2 on the season, South Hamilton will now turn its focus to the rugged Heart of Iowa Conference schedule which will get underway on Thursday with a trip to Jefferson to once again face Greene County.

Balance at net was key for the Hawks on Saturday, as five players accumulated double-digit kill totals. Lily Skartvedt bashed a team-high 21 and Breanne Diersen smacked 20 from her spot in the middle of the floor. Hailey Cavan finished with 19, Katelyn Sogard added 13 and Sydney Friest laced 12.

South Hamilton piled up 100 kills and hit .239 as a team.

Taylor Volkmann orchestrated the offense with 61 assists and Karlie Busch distributed 23.

Defensively, Cavan came up with 31 digs, tops on the team. Libero Leah Jacoby recorded 21.

South Hamilton’s only two losses are to Roland-Story and Clarion-Goldfield-Dows, who are a combined 14-1. CGD took out seventh-ranked (Class 3A) Iowa Falls-Alden last week.

The Hawks have just one tournament remaining on their schedule this season. They’ll compete in the Hampton-Dumont Invite on Saturday, Oct. 6, in Hampton.
