FORT DODGE — Victories over Southeast Valley and Pocahontas Area were the bright spots on an inconsistent opening day of the season for the Webster City volleyball team here on Saturday.

The Lynx swept the Jaguars (23-21, 21-14) and Indians (21-12, 21-15) at the St. Edmond Invite, but dropped their other three matches to Algona Garrigan (21-15, 21-17), St. Edmond (21-18, 21-15) and Aplington-Parkersburg (21-17, 16-21, 15-12).

“The girls played really well against Southeast Valley and Pocahontas,” WCHS head coach Jess Howard said. “Communication and drive were great in those games and if we find a way to get that consistently the girls will be very competitive at all levels.

“We had our chances to change the outcome of all three losses and a few changes in our approach to the game both mentally and physically will help.”

Adalie Schwandt was a force at net, particularly in the two wins. She swatted 20 kills against SEV and Pocahontas Area and finished the day with 35 and a .295 kill efficiency.

The rest of the Lynx squad hit .022 on the day. WCHS put up 93 kills in all.

Kamry Dawson laced 25 kills and Grace Hoversten added 16. Cynthia Whitehill (45 assists) and Morgan Gallentine (29) handled most of the setting duties.

Freshman Alayna Finucan had a solid debut at libero where she piled up 62 digs. Zoey Woodle came up with 37.

Defensively at net, Dawson (nine) and Hoversten (seven) combined for 16 blocks.

Woodle was the Lynx top server with five aces and a perfect 41 for 41 performance. Finucan finished with three aces.

WCHS will be back on the road for two more non-conference matches on Tuesday in Huxley. The Lynx will face Ballard and North Polk. Play will get underway at 5:30 p.m.
