Hawks impressive again, throttle South Hardin for 10th sweep of season

JEWELL — At some point the South Hamilton volleyball team is going to slow down. It’s inevitable, right?

Whether that happens or not, the Hawks are just enjoying the current ride they find themselves on.

For the 10th time in 14 matches, South Hamilton walked away with a sweep on Tuesday, as the Hawks didn’t need much time to dispose of South Hardin in three sets, 25-8, 25-13, 25-17, on Coach Jim Marsh Court. They improved to 12-2 on the season heading into Saturday’s South Central Calhoun Invitational.

“We got off to a really good start and probably played the best volleyball that I’ve seen us play this year,” South Hamilton head coach Ashley Rosenstiel said. “I’m not surprised by (the start of the season) because I thought from day one that we were going to have a solid group. The way that we competed in practice showed me that we were going to have a successful season.”

South Hamilton hit .240 at net and bashed 21 kills, led by senior outside hitter Lily Skartvedt with six. Fellow outside Hailey Cavan and middle Breanne Diersen added four kills each, and Katelyn Sogard chipped in three.

The Hawks were equally as good defensively at net where they piled up 15 blocks, led by Diersen withs six. In the back row, Skartvedt was the digs leader with eight, while Cavan and Leah Jacoby pitched in five each.

Taylor Volkmann, South Hamilton’s senior setter, had another all-around solid performance with 12 assists and two aces on a 19 for 19 night behind the service line. Karlie Busch, the team’s other setter, provided eight assists and two aces. Skartvedt also finished with two aces.

Following this weekend’s tournament, South Hamilton will get to the meat of its schedule with the start of Heart of Iowa Conference play next week. Rosenstiel says her players are aware of the fact that it’s only going to get tougher over the coming weeks.

“We try to remind the girls of that every game,” she said. “We need to stay consistent and be able to play and compete in every single set. The girls are hopefully starting to understand that, but I guess we’ll see how that goes once we start conference.”
