Swenson, Campbell all-league for fourth-place Hawks

Snyder’s 68 leads Gilbert to runaway team title

JEFFERSON — In a top-heavy league like the Heart of Iowa Conference, fourth-place isn’t so bad.

That’s the take away for the South Hamilton girls’ golf team following its 18-hole total of 399 at Wednesday’s conference tournament at the Jefferson Community Golf Course.

With Class 3A power Gilbert in the field, the other six teams knew it was a race for second. The Tigers were as good as advertised with a 336, a 54-stroke advantage over host and runner-up Greene County (390). Prairie City-Monroe (392) and Roland-Story (401) were also part of the logjam inside the top five.

“Our goal was to finish in the top three,” South Hamilton head coach Kathi Fisher said. “Gilbert was pretty much a given … there were very tough team scores this year. The girls were disappointed in the outcome, but we actually shot one of our better 18-hole scores.”

Gilbert sophomore and Baylor recruit Britta Snyder owned the par-72 layout with a 4-under-par 68 to take the individual title by 14 shots over second-place finisher Rachael Danielson (82) of Greene County. Snyder was the favorite to win the state crown a season ago, but opted to skip the state tournament to play in a national field. She’ll be the overwhelming favorite to sit atop 3A later this season.

But she had plenty of help. The Tigers placed three players in the top five and all four of their scorers were inside the top 10.

South Hamilton had a pair of all-conference players, led by Krista Swenson who placed eighth with a 93. Kenady Campbell joined her inside the top-12 threshold; she was 11th with a 99.

“Krista Swenson checked off one of her individual goals this year,” Fisher said.

Lexie Schwerin (102) finished just two shots out of the all-league bubble, and Katelyn Sogard (105) gave the Hawks their final counting score.
