Nerland reaches discus finals, places 8th at Drake Relays

WEBSTER CITY — Cassidy Nerland made the most of her last chance to win a medal at the Drake Relays last Friday in Des Moines.

Webster City’s senior thrower made the finals of the discus and placed eighth in the field of the state’s top talents regardless of class. Nerland registered a toss of 121 feet, 10 inches on the second of her three preliminary-round throws to vault into eighth and it held up through the three-round finals.

Nerland also competed in the shot put last Thursday and placed 15th overall with a best heave of 37-51⁄4.

Tipton’s Jamie Kofron won both throwing events with a toss of 45-51⁄2 in the shot and 143-0 in the discus. She entered her final throw of the discus with the title already in hand and then proceeded to go two feet farther than her previous best.

Nerland now enters the final month of her prep track career focused on the state meet, which will be back at Drake Stadium in a little less than three weeks. Her best discus measurement of the season (129-4) currently has her at the top of the Class 3A leaderboard. She’s tied for second in the shot (40-9).

Webster City’s 4×100-meter relay was also a part of the Drake Relays Friday evening. The quartet of Marisa Garrels, Ashlyn Hay, Zoey Woodle and Haley Flaws turned in a time of 52.64 seconds to place 66th among the 80 entrants in the prelims.
