WEBSTER CITY — Jordan Tanner has never been a prototypical point guard, but his versatility and leadership have always been overwhelming qualities.

So much so that the North Central Conference coaches had no choice but to laud him with their highest honor for the second straight season.

Tanner, a Webster City senior, eared a repeat first-team all-NCC accolade, it was recently announced, after he guided the Lynx to another top-tier finish in the league. He was joined by teammates and fellow award winners Cameron Moen, a second-team choice, and Henry Hoversten, who landed on the third team.

Clear Lake’s Zach Lester, Fort Dodge St. Edmond’s Andrew Gibb and Algona’s Wyatt Wegener were all unanimous first-team choices. The remainder of the top unit included Clarion-Goldfield-Dows’ Sam Urness and Iowa Falls-Alden’s Karson Sharar.

Tanner, who preferred roughing it up inside the lane more than he did hanging out on the perimeter, was the go-to guy for WCHS in each of the last two seasons. He helped guide the Lynx to their second straight conference championship as a junior.

Tanner averaged 15.0 points per game and shot nearly 55 percent from the field during his senior campaign, which ended in the Class 3A substate semifinal round against Charles City last Thursday night. He also averaged 4.5 rebounds, the second-most on the team, and led the way for WCHS in assists (66) and steals (36).

Moen, a 3-point specialist who always seemed to come through with a big shot in the waning moments of close games, averaged 12.2 points per game during the campaign. His 64 triples were the fourth-most in the conference; he shot 35 percent from long range.

Hoversten, a first-year starter in the paint for WCHS, will be the catalyst for the team next season. As a junior he averaged 11.3 points and 8.2 rebounds per game while shooting 59 percent from the field.

If the NCC handed out a Most Valuable Player award, it’s a foregone conclusion that Lester would have been the unanimous choice. The senior guard averaged 30.2 points per game and shot 55 percent from the field to lead the Lions to the league title.

Sharar, a freshman scoring machine, and Gibb both averaged 20.8 points per game to slot right behind Lester.

Lynx Banquet

The Webster City boys’ basketball team will hold its year-ending banquet on Thursday at 6 p.m. in the high school cafe.

A potluck dinner will be held prior to the ceremony. Those attending are asked to bring a hot dish, a dessert, table service and their own drinks.
