Lynx lack the firepower to hang with Cowgirls

Nerland leads WCHS in kills and digs

CLARION — A difficult early stretch in the North Central Conference continued to get the better of the Webster City volleyball team here last night.

Utilizing a strong front row, Clarion-Goldfield-Dows put away the Lynx in three quick sets, 25-15, 25-16, 25-13. The Cowgirls (17-6, 3-1 NCC) remained in contention for the league title, while WCHS (3-19, 1-3 NCC) dropped its 11th consecutive match.

Errors weren’t the problem for the Lynx; they had just 11 up at net and hit a respectable .200 as a team. But they collected just two blocks defensively, both from Cassidy Nerland.

“We competed well against them, we just didn’t have enough to finish out rallies,” WCHS head coach Jess Howard said. “It comes back to that consistency factor and making sure we’re attacking every single time we have the chance to attack.

“They’re very sound and they don’t make a lot of mistakes. You’ve got to make sure you take advantage of every free ball they give you.”

Nerland put together a solid performance in the loss with six kills and eight digs, both team highs. Halle Mason contributed five kills and eight digs, and Adalie Schwandt ripped five kills.

“Cassidy did a great job in the back row,” Howard said. “They’ve got some power in the front row and she did a great job of popping the ball up and keeping it alive for us.”

Cheyenne Johnson finished with seven digs for the Lynx. Sarah Vogelbacher (13) and Cynthia Whitehill (11) combined to hand out 24 assists.

WCHS had a perfect night from behind the service line in 45 chances. Schwandt had two aces, while Mason and Whitehill both had one.

The Lynx will be off until next Thursday when they will host Fort Dodge St. Edmond at 7:30 p.m.
