Fuhs twins lead DMACC to golf nationals

Avery Fuhs places fifth, Alec Fuhs ninth at regional; Bears headed to Mesa, Arizona

WEBSTER CITY — Webster City High School graduates Alec and Avery Fuhs will lead the Des Moines Area Community College men’s golf team to the NJCAA Division II national tournament at Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Arizona, later this month.

The two most decorated golfers in the history of the Lynx boys’ program, the twin brothers were the top scorers for the Bears at last week’s Region XI tournament and Veenker Memorial Golf Course in Ames, as they guided their team to a third-place finish.

DMACC finished the 36-hole, two-day tournament with a total score of 625. Kirkwood Community College won the regional with a 601.

Avery Fuhs led the way with at 153; he shot rounds of 74 and 79 to place fifth in the difficult field. Alec Fuhs tied for ninth with a 157; he struggled on Day 1 with an 81, but rebounded to shoot a 76 on Day 2.

Robert Flattery (81-78-159), Parker Davidson (83-76-159) and Dalton Huisman (83-76-159) also scored well for DMACC and shared 13th place.

The national tournament will run from May 23-26.

Alec and Avery Fuhs were the leaders of back-to-back Class 3A state championships for Webster City in 2015 and 2016. Both were multiple-time all-state selections and Alec holds the distinction of the highest placing individual for the Lynx at a state tournament. He was second a season ago.
