Ferrell bests Fielder for medalist, Lynx fire 163 to prevail
GRUNDY CENTER — After an unusually long layoff, the fourth-ranked (Class 3A) Webster City boys’ golf team got back on the course and won a triangular meet here on Tuesday.
Nathan Ferrell and Drew Fielder took over the top of the leaderboard, as they led the Lynx (163) to a 17-stroke victory over host Grundy Center (180) and a 52-shot rout of Gladbrook-Reinbeck (215) at Town and Country Golf Course.
“We were a little rusty after not playing for about a week and a half,” WCHS coach Dave Brighton said. “The course played difficult … we played from the back tees and every green slopes several directions.”
Ferrell and Fielder both turned in rounds of 39. Ferrell secured the medalist honor in a two-hole playoff against his teammate.
Bryan Ferrell added a 42 and Connor Shannon carded a 43 for the Lynx.
Jake Bangasser led Grundy Center with a 41. Joe Smoldt, who was named Mr. Basketball this past winter, was the low man for Gladbrook-Reinbeck with a 47.
WCHS will host the Lynx Invite at Briggs Woods Golf Course this afternoon. Play is slated to begin at 1:30 p.m.
