With one final victory, Ripslinger, a University of Arkansas recruit, became the first girl in Iowa history to pull off the improbable 400, 800, 1,500 and 3,000 meters sweep at a single state meet on the famed blue oval.
With Class 3A titles in the 400 and 3,000 under her belt on Thursday at the Iowa State Co-Ed Track and Field Championship, Ripslinger rolled to victory in the 800 Saturday morning and then returned in the afternoon to add the fourth gold medal in the 1,500.
Ripslinger’s legendary career included nine state championships, five runner-up finishes and 16 total state medals. She owns the 3A state-meet records in the 800, 1,500 and 3,000. Add seven Drake Relays crowns to her haul and Ripslinger exits the prep stage as one of the most decorated track and field athletes in state history.
Her highlight-filled weekend propelled Assumption to a state-record fifth straight team championship. The Knights piled up 93 points to hold a comfortably lead over 3A runner-up Pella (77).

Other notable storylines on Saturday were:
•Waukee (4A) and Cascade (2A) claimed repeat girls’ team championships. Waukee scored a 4A-record 116 points, while Cascade finished with 65. In 1A, Sigourney (48 points) nipped Maple Valley/Anthon-Oto (46) for the gold.
•West Des Moines Valley (4A, 73 points), Marion (3A, 69), Madrid (2A, 61) and Kingsley-Piersen/Woodbury Central (2A, 61), and Lisbon (1A, 89) earned boys’ team championships.
•Two girls went home as triple-distance champions. Mid-Prairie’s Anna Hostetler dominated the 800, 1,500 and 3,000 in 2A, while Janette Schraft of East Mills matched the feat in 1A.
•It was a memorable day for the Santi family from Madrid. Siblings Rylan and Michael Santi won the girls’ and boys’ 2A 100-meter dash titles just minutes apart. Just 15 minutes later, Michael added gold in the 110 high hurdles, and Rylan matched her brother with a second state title in the 200. Michael was also second in the 200, to go along with a silver medal won in the long jump earlier in the week.

•West Burlington Notre Dame speedster Isaiah Trousil will go down as one of the state’s all-time great sprinters after he became just the third Iowan ever to double up in the 100 and 200 in three consecutive years. He dominated the two sprints in 3A-record times of 10.74 (100) and 21.22 (200); he was the 2A champion in both events in 2015 and 2016. He concluded his prep career with 10 titles in all, the third most all-time.
•A day after setting the all-time state record in the 110 high hurdles (13.91 seconds), Cedar Rapids Prairie’s Joah Banks won his second straight 4A title in the event in 13.98 on Saturday.
•Lisbon’s 1A team title on the boys’ side was orchestrated by four relay victories.
•Despite the less than ideal weather conditions — rain and cold temperatures dominated on Friday and Saturday — the attendance was 36,028 for the three-day meet.
