WEBSTER CITY — The wins came in droves, each one pushing more and more momentum to Webster City’s side of the court Friday afternoon.

And when it was all over, the Lynx said goodbye to that goose egg in the win column that has followed them around like a dark cloud for most of the first month of the tennis season.

Keyed by the top of its lineup, WCHS seized command in singles play and continued to pour it on in doubles en route to a 7-2 victory over Hampton-Dumont at the WCHS courts.

Not only was it the Lynx first dual-meet win of the season, but it also avenged a 5-4 loss to the Bulldogs back on April 6. WCHS turned the tables on Hampton-Dumont in the Nos. 4 and 6 singles matches and the No. 2 doubles bout from the first meeting.

“We have continued to work fundamentals and situational tennis in practice and it’s paying off,” WCHS coach Ben Jass said. “I credit our seniors Brandon (Peck), Steffen (Chambers), Kolton (Gemmel) and Luke (Bergeson) for our success. They are good young men to be around.”

Peck, Chambers and Gemmel all dominated their singles opponents in the top three slots. Peck dropped just one game in a 10-1 pro-set rout of Isaac Shelton at No. 1, Chambers pushed past Dakota Harms 10-6 at No. 2, and Gemmel matched Peck’s easy win in his match against Jacob Grefe at No. 3.

Alex Hooker, who didn’t play in the first meet against the Bulldogs, kept the Lynx rolling with a 10-3 victory over Josh Freyholtz at No. 4, and Jonathon Dixson gave the team a 5-1 lead with his 10-5 romp past Noah Walker at No. 6.

With just one doubles win entering the day, WCHS increased it to three with victories for Chambers and Gemmel, and Peck and Hooker.
